Tracheotomy is a surgical intervention that consists in dissecting the tracheal wall and inserting a hollow tube-cannula into the lumen of the trachea. Emergency tracheotomy is indicated for violation of the patency of the trachea due to inflammatory edema, tumor obstruction, spasm of the vocal cords, trauma, as well as for removal of large foreign bodies. The trachea is opened with a longitudinal or cross section below the mechanical obstacle zone. If necessary, a double hollow cannula made of plastic or metal is installed through the incision into the trachea, which is used for suctioning mucus, administering drugs, and mechanical ventilation. After the restoration of spontaneous breathing, decannulation is performed; a defect in the tracheal wall usually closes on its own.
