Photodynamic therapy in Russia
Photodynamic therapy is a method of anticancer treatment based on the use of special pharmaceuticals (photosensitizers) and a directed beam of light. It is used to treat tumors of the skin, oral cavity, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, visual, genitourinary system. Photosensitizers, when administered intravenously, orally or by application, selectively accumulate in tumor tissue. When a tumor is additionally exposed to laser radiation with a certain wavelength, a cascade of photochemical reactions is triggered with the release of singlet oxygen, which has a cytotoxic effect. As a result, the destruction of the neoplasm occurs in the absence of damage to the surrounding tissues.
