Medical Group "FMBA (Federal Medical Biological Agency)"

The Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA of Russia) is a federal executive body that ensures the radiation, chemical, biological safety of the country and the population, as well as the organization of a health protection system at enterprises of strategically important industries with especially dangerous working conditions. In accordance with Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of December 26, 2020 No. 2289, it is directly subordinate to the Government of the Russian Federation.

The Federal Medical and Biological Agency serves about 3.5 million people living in 20 closed administrative territorial entities, 39 satellite cities and science cities located in 54 regions of the Russian Federation and the city of Baikonur in Kazakhstan. The structure of the FMBA of Russia includes over 300 subordinate medical organizations and about 2.5 thousand healthcare facilities in Russia and Baikonur.

The Federal Medical and Biological Agency is responsible for protecting the health of employees of more than 700 organizations with especially dangerous working conditions, risks of radiation, chemical and biological damage, including divisions of the state corporations Rosatom and Roskosmos, chemical and defense industry facilities, and as well as institutions that store museum strains of microorganisms and viruses.

There are 35 research and development centers of the FMBA in the system of FMBA of Russia, 10 of which are engaged in fundamental research.

The Agency adheres to a policy of close interagency cooperation with the Russian Academy of Sciences, scientific institutes and centers, state corporations Rosatom, Roscosmos, Rostec, the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the Government of the Russian Federation, the Russian Ministry of Health, the Russian Ministry of Sports, the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Education and Science Russia, other ministries and departments, government authorities at various levels, as well as public organizations and professional communities, including international organizations and structures.

Also important areas of activity of the FMBA of Russia are:

• Space medicine – providing medical assistance in the preparation and implementation of space flights, the creation of effective methods of maintaining health
  and working capacity of cosmonauts under the influence of outer space factors – a high level of radiation, a long stay in weightlessness and an artificial habitat.
• Marine and diving medicine – medical assistance in the preparation and conduct of diving and caisson works. Creation of effective methods for maintaining the health and performance of divers and sailors in conditions of extreme exposure to factors of the sea and underwater space.
• Sports medicine – medical support for athletes of the Russian national teams, coordination and digitalization of the sports medicine system.
• Blood service and donation – coordination of the Blood Service of the Russian Federation, monitoring of the procurement of donor blood and its components, research and practical application of transplantology. Under the state control of the FMBA for ensuring the safety of donor blood and its components are 96 stations and 271 blood transfusion departments in all regions of the country.
