National Medical Research Center for Cardiovascular Surgery named after A.N. Bakulev

National Medical Research Center for Cardiovascular Surgery named after A.N. Bakuleva of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation is the main institution in Russia, providing assistance to adults and children with cardiovascular diseases for over 60 years.

Annually at the National Medical Research Center for Cardiovascular Surgery named after A.N. Bakulev performs more than 12,000 operations on the heart and blood vessels. More than 5,000 are performed under artificial circulation.

Large volumes of cardiovascular operations performed at the highest professional level make the Center a leader not only in Russia, but also in Europe.

Operations and operating rooms

The Center has 36 operating rooms, where dozens of surgical operations are performed daily for patients with various pathologies of the cardiovascular system. Today, the Center has 21 operating rooms for open surgery, 10 operating rooms for endovascular interventions and 5 operating rooms for the surgical treatment of rhythm disturbances.

Every year, the Center performs more than 12 thousand operations a year, of which more than 5 thousand open heart surgeries, more than 2.5 thousand surgeries using artificial circulation and more than 5 thousand endovascular interventions. Carrying out such a large number of operations has become possible thanks to the work of its own Department of Clinical and Industrial Transfusiology, which annually conducts more than 10 thousand donations, preparing and processing more than 7 thousand liters of donated blood.

Equipment

National Medical Research Center has a wide arsenal of modern diagnostic capabilities that allow the Center's specialists with a high degree of accuracy in the shortest possible time to determine pathologies of the heart and blood vessels, as well as to diagnose concomitant diseases.

The Center conducts CT, MRI, PET-CT studies, ultrasound, ECG, echocardiography, precordial cardiac mapping, stress tests, spirometry, radionuclide studies, ultrasound and transcranial Doppler ultrasound, minimally invasive endovascular diagnostic methods and other instrumental studies.

In 2021, within the framework of a subsidy from the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation to the Federal State Budgetary Institution “NMITs SSH named after V.I. A.N. Bakulev ”of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, the unique and the only modern diagnostic and operational complexes in Russia at the level of the best world standards were put into operation.

For pregnant women

Also in Center has all the possibilities for examination, observation and outpatient treatment of pregnant women with cardiovascular pathology in themselves or in their unborn child. Perinatal Cardiology Center named after A.N. Bakuleva is the country's first Center for Cardiology, created for the development of intrauterine cardiology in Russia. Here, patients can undergo a complete obstetric and cardiological examination to assess the risk of pregnancy and childbirth in cardiac pathology. Specialists of the Perinatal Cardiology Center diagnose congenital malformations in the fetus with an accuracy of 98%, starting from the 13th week of pregnancy.

Rehabilitation of patients

One of the important activities of Center is a comprehensive rehabilitation of patients after operations on the heart and blood vessels. In the structure of the Center, 2 departments of rehabilitation for adults are successfully functioning, and in 2017 the first and only specialized rehabilitation center for children with heart defects in Russia was opened in the Center. Its main activity is aimed at carrying out a complex of rehabilitation programs that contribute to the rapid return of children who have undergone heart surgery and their parents to a normal rhythm of life.

Own laboratories

On the basis of the FSBI "NMITs SSH im. A.N. Bakulev ”of the Ministry of Health of Russia there are a number of production laboratories in which specialists develop and create medical products that are successfully used not only in our Center, but also in many other cardiac surgery clinics in Russia. The Center has established a serial production of biological valves and conduits, synthetic prostheses of blood vessels with thromboresistant, antimicrobial properties and other products.

The Laboratory for Modeling and Study of Cardiac and Vascular Pathology with Oberblock and Vivarium conducts fundamental and applied research on topical issues of modern cardiovascular surgery, develops and manufactures new products for cardiac surgery, conducts preclinical expert studies to assess the functional effectiveness and biological effect of implants.
